| Ref No: afjob-seng200409-001 Position: Senior Software Engineer AfriNIC is the emerging Internet Number registry for Africa and Indian Ocean region. AfriNIC will provide numerous coordination services to ISPs in Africa and support their Internet number resource management. One of the main activities of the AfriNIC will be to develop and operate user services for its members, including the AfriNIC WHOIS Database and Online support. AfriNIC activities are distributed around the continent as follow: o Mauritius: Headquarters and Administration Center. o South Africa: Technical operations. o Ghana: Training Coordination centre. o Egypt: Mirror Center for AfriNIC Operation AfriNIC currently have a vacancy for a Senior Software Engineer to be based in South Africa. The position also handle participation in the full life cycle of software development supporting the functionality and mission of AfriNIC. This includes research, design, development, testing, and documentation. The functionality of AfriNIC includes registration software, billing/accounting solutions, web interfaces, and any future technical growth and implementations at AfriNIC Primary responsibilities and duties Develop effective relevant code using C/C++, PERL/CGI, and/or HTML or other languages as deemed or appropriate by the CTO Relevant code includes entirely new code, or changes to existing code to adapt a new requirement. Design graphic user interface (GUI) displays to accomplish goals of user requests, when necessary. Write and/or review project specifications outlined by design requirements, flowcharts, and diagrams. Develop and maintain registration software to update the whois database. Create utilities to modify records, produce statistical and timely reports, and scan the database for integrity. Develop and maintain software for dataflow integration between Billing/Accounting service and Membership Services Departments. Develop, maintain and support software for other departments as necessary. Make recommended changes to improve system performance including maximize database performance. Alter programs to increase operating efficiency. Train staff when implementing new tools or modifying existing tools. Test code completely prior to release. Debug/detect syntactical or logical errors reported by staff, or during testing. Make appropriate modifications to code, and re-test. Document all code. Write documentation to describe program development, logic coding, and corrections. Develop manual pages and/or website outline available tools. Establish project timelines with management for project milestones and completion dates. Being able to represent AfriNIC during industry related meetings and provide periodic technical project updates during those meetings. Evaluate new software products, develop comparative analysis, and prepare purchase suggestions to management. Additional Duties Perform other related duties as required and assigned by the CTO. Background / Skills Required: 4 to 5 year University degree preferably in an information systems or computer science related discipline OR equivalent work experience. At least 4 years job-related experience, including structured programming techniques, structured analysis and design, and computer operations. Good knowledge of C/C++, and PERL in UNIX and Open source environment. Familiarity of IPv4, IPv6 protocols, routing and networking issues. Ability to understand complex instructions, and work independently. Good interpersonal skills. Strong verbal and written skills. Physical Requirements Moderate physical activity with the ability to type and perform repetitive motions. Some lifting and stooping are required to unpack deliveries and stock office supplies. Ability to travel to various locations to attend industry related conferences. Good interpersonal skills. Strong verbal and written skills. Salary The annual salary is between $US 24,000 and US$ 30,000 yearly on a full-time basis depending of background. AfriNIC offers an international working environment, attractive remuneration and travel opportunities. French language skills would be an advantage. Job location The job will be performed primarily at the AfriNIC Technical Operation Center in Pretoria (South Africa). The Software Engineer may be asked to work temporarily (not more than 60 days) in any of the AfriNIC representation on the continent.
