| This Froum seems to deal with portraying Mauritius only as the Idyllic Paradise Island to the outside world. Instead of providing frivolous information to European who cannot make it in their own countries, on how can they migrate to Mauritius with a half full pocket of Euros in search for what they beleive to be the idyllic life style. Why not give them a taste of the real social implications aswell ? So, lets put this Forum to the test for what it's worth..! Every time someone raises a moral or social issue about Mauritius on this Forum. All come out with gun balzing with that same denial and that same pathetic question of "What is your problem.?" Well, I'll tell you what's the problem. As long as a Mauritian reaches a certain social status, meaning a 9 to 5 cushy job, the mentality of "I am all right Jack ", who cares about others, kicks in. Mauritians living in Mauritius seems to only want to hear only good things about their country and try to burry their heads in the sand avoiding other important issues. I left Mauritius for that same reason of inequality and discrimination that plaque Mauritian life, for a better future somewhere else. This does not mean that I do not love or have any feelings for my Country of birth and should'nt have concerns for its underpriviledge majority, who like me would like to get out but are not so lucky. I guess you could say that I am an activist in exile with a voice for the silent destitutes. Let me tell you that when most of you were still in nappies. I contrubuted with others and past leaders for democracy in this country, only to see it being decimated by existing incompetent politicians and a sleepy new generation. People seems to be more concerned about if they can get broadband than a better health care system or helping their Mauritian brothers in need and portraying this picture perfect of Mauritius to the outside world Mauritius, with its failing leaders on a rotating shift and with no international negociation skills. Again the main emphasis is on tourism. What would happen when the price of sugar reaches rock bottom and international investors move out, simply because it is no longer viable for them, which by the way has already started. Would all the unemployed work in the tourism industry ? I think not. Have you ever heard the expression that "Man cannot leave on bread alone" Yes, I can hear you.. :P Well what are you doing about it ? As for me. within my capacity as an expat. I sponsor Mauritian children in need of critical surgery in Australia due to the lack of medical facilities in Mauritius. I also help in finding accommodation and part-time jobs for under previledge students, regardless of colour or ethnic background so that they have a chance of a better future on their return and hopefully will contribute more proactively for their country and if necessary on a forum like this one and this is my contribution to my people and my countryman. For those on this forum and those living overseas with quotation such as " "Je ne jure que par mon Ile" or other mediocre quotes. What is your contribution to your Country and Countryman ? apart from making small anecdote. I wish you Farewell my friends and I hope you wake up from this awful and shameful Dream... |

I'm new to this forum, and the first question i'll ask you is:is it better in Australia?Or elsewhere?I myself spent 10 yrs in England and Switzerland, but I prefered to come back here in Mauritius, mainly for its climate and people. I remember that in England, there was so much fog that we had to drive at 5 mph!I was really depressed to go to work in the dark in winter and go back home in the dark...Why did I go there in the first place? I had no job! But destiny is such that we have to go elsewhere to experiment for our karma, and once we get knowledge regarding spiritual life ,the world is no problem to live in,as it's actually an illusion. There is a lot of injustice here due to ignorance and egoism:some people earn Rs.500,000/month and another Rs.500!,but I hope the future will be better and there will be no such discrepanccy that could lead to revolution...Let's exchange ideas and be positive for Mauritius and the world...as there's always hope... Congratulations for your social work! |

| Matrix, you raise a lot of good points for sure. although I can't really comment on all of them, I'd like to express something that aggravates me a lot about mauritius, and that is the rapidly declining number of public beaches. I know I dont really have a right to complain about this, but it really hurts me to see how many hotels have popped up on land that really is for the rest of us. Wasnt there any legislation deeming that doing such a thing it and of itself spoils the beauty of mauritius? Example...8 years ago, i remember having a picnic...in the place they call 'Le morne' or something like that.....now...there's a fat hotel in its way, and the bit of beach that's 'left'...is only about 10 metres across.if not less. I mean, how sickening. I really dont think I could feel more hurt and sickened by the notion that an area of land that ppl used to be able to go visit is now over taken by the big monster that is called tourism. I know its wat makes the country run, but surely there has to be a point where we draw the line.... There's that bit of beach in the south.....from Chemin Grenier......beautiful bit of beach....really..i know its dangerous waters over there, or a bit rockier than usual....but I hear they're planning on building over there too.... I don't live in mauritius, but it still means a lot to me. My parents are mauritian, I myself have never lived there, but visited there. But that doesnt mean to say it doesn't upset me what I hear goes on. How ppl are treated badly, and how corrupt so many institutions are..... sometimes it hurts so much that you don't even want to look in that direction. But that is so ......that itself is wrong too...... I'm studying to become a doctor.....its a bit hard going at the moment, i dont even know if im gona finish the course, but.........I'd like to think that I could go to mauritius and be a good doc, but it scares me to think about what things they have going......you know the medical system/the hospitals they have there, i visited the hospital once, I never felt so upset...with the goverment, with the lack of faciilities, with what it is you want to do , with the West wasting and everything....really...... Its bad everywhere. - i mean globally.... so in answer to your question...is it all just an illusion......of course it is... but the one thing that makes it better sometimes, is the spirit of the ppl, and the family.i could only imagine though, that this can sometimes become just as frustrating. Mauritius is moving so fast, I just wish it would slow down. They want to fit into the global community at the risk of destroying what identity they have left.... someone started a thread on this already.....heh, what if it really is the Goverment that has an identity crisis they are imposing on the mauritian world. I felt so upset all the time about it....i mean from a 'I want to do so much but i can't or dont know how to '' point of view..... anyway...just my thots on the matter..... also...do any of you know of a good mauritian chat forum.....I know there was one but cant remember wat it was called. |
